Nullport

Chapter 7

Day by day

The reset, Fate Cards, checks, life actions and your streak.

What counts as a day

The day resets at 4:00 a.m. your local time. Rent, installments and firmware are paid in the weekly settlement; see the Money chapter.

Fate Cards

You get one free draw a day. Turn over three cards and pick one; if you want to draw again, it costs energy. Some cards are part of a series, and what you choose decides where the next card goes.

Checks

Risky options and risky work all spell out their check: roll 1–100, and you succeed if the roll is at least “101 − success chance”. Your success chance combines a base value, your skill, your traits and implants, your heat and your Humanity, and it is capped at 5%–95%. So the top few rolls always succeed, a critical success, and the bottom few always fail, a critical failure.

Life actions

Sleep it off, grab a bowl, take a shower, watch the city channel, call an old contact, go dark for a night: each takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, and the effect kicks in as soon as you're done. They use a separate life slot, not a task slot, and each has its own cooldown.

Streak

Your first task claim or Fate Card choice each day adds a day to your streak. Days 3, 7, 14, and 30 each give you a style shard.

Alerts and the Daily

Anything in the city that concerns you goes into your notifications: tap the bell at the top right of your HUD to see them. Arrears, collections, firmware lapses, worn-out implants, forced moves and words others leave you on Fate Cards all end up there.

Once you turn on push notifications in Settings, finished timers, the morning edition at 8:00 and a streak about to break at 21:00 are pushed to your phone (all in your local time). Push is set per device: if it's on for your phone, turn it on again on your computer. On iPhone, add Nullport to your home screen first. There are no pushes from 23:00 until 8:00 the next morning, except urgent ones like collections; you get at most 6 a day; and you can turn off each type in Settings.

A new issue of the World Daily comes out every day in the small hours (City Standard Time), covering the city as it was the day before: how many people arrived, what they chose, who went bankrupt, who achieved their life dream. Every number in the paper comes from something that really happened in the city. The Daily names residents for their good news from the day before; bad news only ever says something like “a resident from The Blocks”. If you'd rather not be named, turn off “Let the World Daily name me” in Settings.
